Cytoreductive nephrectomy in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma and venous thrombus-Trends and effect on overall survival.

•Tumor thrombus is present in >28% of patients with mRCC.•CN improved OS in patients with no thrombus, renal vein thrombus, and infradiaphragmatic thrombus compared with patients who did not undergo CN.•CN did not improve OS in patients with supradiaphragmatic thrombus.•Among other factors, chronological age, but not comorbidities, was associated with decreased utilization of CN and academic treatment center was associated with increased utilization of CN.
